Emmanuel Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor would be remembered for his time in the Premier League with his excessive goal celebration during the game between Manchester City and Arsenal in 2009 but what a lot of people won’t know is that the player apologised for his action later. Emmanuel Adebayor made the apology while he was being interviewed by Sky Sports shortly after the game. The Togolese striker moved from Arsenal to Manchester City before the start of the 2009/10 season in a £25m deal and the transfer didn’t go down well with the Arsenal fans. Emmanuel Adebayor had received tons of abuses towards him and his family from the Arsenal fans ahead of the Premier League clash between hosts Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. The poor treatment received from the Arsenal fans prompted him to run the length of the field after he found the back of net during the game, which ended in a 4-2 defeat for the Gunners. After the game, Emmanuel Adebayorapologised when he was asked by a Sky Sports reporter if he had lost his head. In his response, the player confessed that he lost his head during the game and that as a human, he is prone to mistakes.

Manchester United fans have enough reasons not to like ex-Arsenal and Manchester City attacker Emmanuel Adebayor, who’s a free agent after leaving Olimpia, a top club in the South American nation of Paraguay. Emmanuel Adebayor had to leave Olimpia in July 2020 after the outbreak of Covid-19 across the world. The Togolese football icon had featured for some matches before leaving the club. Manchester United fans already have some sort of dislike for Emmanuel Adebayor as a former player of city rivals Manchester City. He’s also an ex-player of Arsenal.

 

Arsenal and Manchester United enjoyed an intense rivalry for many years. Until the current Premier League season, Arsenal had not won at the home of Manchester United since Emmanuel Adebayor scored the winning goal of the game at the start of the 2006/07 Premier League campaign. Emmanuel Adebayor scored the only goal of the match as Arsenal beat the Red Devils 1-0 at the Theatre of Dreams. Arsenal were able to do the double over Manchester United that season after they came from a goal down to beat the Red Devils 2-1 in their home leg. (more…)

Nigerian-born Togolese football legend Emmanuel Adebayor began his football career at the age of 11 at a previously popular football training school known as Sporting Club de Lome or CDS (Centre de Developpement Sportive). His move to European football was facilitated by then Metz coach Francis De Taddeo who spotted Emmanuel Adebayor during a youth tournament in the European country of Sweden in 1991. He thereafter moved from Togo to France to play for Metz. Emmanuel Adebayor was with the Metz youth team before he rose through the ranks to play for the first team.

 

Emmanuel Adebayor made his debut in French Ligue 1 in the colours of Metz in November 2001. His first game in the French top flight came against Sochaux. During his time at Metz, Emmanuel Adebayor scored 13 goals in 34 matches in the second division also known as Ligue II and was named the best player in the same season (2001/02). His form for Metz prompted French Ligue 1 giants Monaco to sign him in the summer of 2003 but he didn’t enjoy regular playing time like what was obtainable during his time at Metz.

Togolese football icon Emmanuel Adebayor has enjoyed a very good career that took him to clubs from his native Togo to France to England to Turkey and finally Paraguay. Emmanuel Adebayor has played professionally for eleven clubs in his football career till date.

His career started at Togolese first division team OC Agaza but he didn’t turn to a professional footballer until he was poached by French club Metz in 1999. Two years later, he made his professional debut during the league game between Metz and Sochaux in November 2001. He spent two years at Metz before signing for AS Monaco in the summer of 2003.

His move came after Metz had suffered relegation to the second tier of French football in 2002. Emmanuel Adebayor scored 13 goals in 34 outings in the league in the second tier shortly before his transfer to Monaco. Adebayor was part of the AS Monaco that reached the 2004 UEFA Champions League final before they were thrashed 3-0 by Jose Mourinho’s FC Porto. During that Champions League run, the Togolese footballer played nine games for Monaco and was an unused substitute in the final. (more…)
